Clergy Response Teams – Working To Make Us Submit To Tyranny

“It is blasphemy to call tyrants and oppressors God’s ministers. They are more properly called the “messengers of Satan to buffet us”. So rulers are properly God’s ministers but such as are just ruling in the fear of God. When once magistrates act contrary to their office and the end of their institution, when they rob and ruin the public, instead of being the guardians of it’s peace and welfare, they immediately cease to be the ordinance and ministers of God, and no more deserve that character than common pirates and highwaymen”.

JOHN WINGATE THORNTON The Pulpit Of the American Revolution, Pg 73

It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore stand firm and do not subject yourself to the yoke of slavery. – Galatians 5:1

Rev. Thornton takes Romans 13 and Galatians way out of context. Romans was written to people being tortured and killed under the persecution of the Roman Empire, yet Paul calls for their submission to the gov’t. That verse in Galatians is talking about SIN which enslaves us, not forced relocation. The Romans were not in the least seeking to rule the empire by rules which applied to the Scriptures. Christ’s kingdom is the antithesis of any human kingdom and He did call for us to give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s (money and anything else they desire to extort – “if someone makes you walk one mile, go with him two”) and to God what is God’s (your life, your worship, your all). Trusting God will mean submitting your life into the hands of evil men, as Christ, Peter, Paul, Stephen, James, Daniel, Joseph, and scads of others did in scripture. All save Joseph had next to nothing (and that prince of Egypt spent is days with the sheep herders) but in the fellowship of believers they had everything. They evidenced their faith by loving their brethren sacrificially and telling people about the good news that Jesus Christ has made it possible to live forever as children of God the Father. And that cost them everything! The revolution was started by the Prince of Peace submitting to the consequences of our sin – NOT protecting his own interests at all costs!
