Islamic State Needs Jobs Says State Department ‘We Cannot Win This War By Killing ISIS’

ISIS-Needs-Jobs

No – it’s not an SNL or Mad TV skit – Obama’s State Department imbecile Marie Harf says “We cannot win this war by killing them (ISIS)” …..they need jobs and opportunities”.

Do I really need to comment on abject idiocy and insanity continuing to be displayed by the colossal morons in charge of our country?

Methinks Obama wants to give welfare to his Jihadist pals at your expense.  Even Chris ‘Thrill up my leg’ Matthews was incredulous.

The entire world is laughing their asses off at us, and soon – they are going to take advantage of a nation and people they see as weak and afraid.

Just more evidence of the love, tenderness and love Obama seeks to extend to his jihadist pals attempting to create the Islamic Caliphate.

State Dept. Spox on ISIS: “We CANNOT win this war by killing them”

State Department Spokes(IDIOT) Marie Harf told Chris Matthews tonight that we cannot win this war with ISIS by killing them. She said we have to get to the root cause of why people are attracted to Jihad — you know like poverty, jobs, etc…

“We’re killing a lot of them and we’re going to keep killing more of them. So are the Egyptians, so are the Jordanians. They’re in this fight with us. But we cannot win this war by killing them. We cannot kill our way out of this war. We need in the medium to longer term to go after the root causes that leads people to join these groups, whether it’s lack of opportunity for jobs…”

Government Is No Longer To Be Trusted

Burning Capitol

When institutions and government are no longer trusted, a failed society will always turn to a tyrant who will promise to cut through all the red tape and govern with a pen, a phone and brute force.

We are witnessing the death throes of a once great and moral nation.  Obama and his MarxoFascist hordes are fundamentally transforming the country into an authoritarian state via the collapse and misery they are orchestrating.  As the pain of skyrocketing energy prices, food and health care reach critical mass along with a debt and currency crisis that promise to collapse the entire structure of America – upheaval is a certainty.

The Nero-esque contempt and snide deflections of reality by the regime in power is beyond comprehension.  When the pain of the people over loss of jobs and working hours due to the ever-changing ObamaCare mandates, the regime claims that such people have been ‘liberated’ from ‘job lock’ and free to write poetry and pursue the things they cannot do when having to work a job to obtain healthcare benefits.

While the propagandists for Obamas regime and the ruling class lecture that welfare is job growth, freedom is slavery and Capitalism is income inequality – a day is soon coming when civility will end and the pain and misery will garner a violent reaction in protest.

Without question, the Obama regime is already prepared to guide the populace to hate the chosen culprits of blame.  They are finalizing plans to criminalize normal business practices, and accelerate dictatorial despotism with the promise of easing the very misery they caused via draconian acts that will end this great experiment in liberty forever.

Elections are moot.  We have reached the point of no-return.

Got Christ?  That is the ONLY assurance we can count on as we slide into an abyss that is going to stun the world.

When Nobody Trusts The Government

by Daniel Greenfield

The usual formulation that you will see masticated these days by the flimsy jaws of men and women who have broken free of the editorial column to become freelance ponderers and thinkers is that the Republicans are the neo-confederate secessionists who distrust the government while the liberals, and their captive class of government employees, union members and official minority groups trust in it.

That formulation, like so much else in the spilled ink of the dying newspaper, is wrong.

Both sides distrust the government. They just react to that distrust differently. The right reacts to that distrust by trying to limit or pull down the government. The left reacts to it by trying to take it over.

The contradiction comes out most strongly among liberalism’s minority base. For example, blacks are more likely to trust the Federal government than whites but less likely to trust local government. This doesn’t reflect trust in government so much as it reflects a perception of which level of government is less trustworthy. From a minority perspective, national representation is safer than local governance.

Distrusting the neutrality of government and attempting to hijack it for corrupt sectarian and tribal interests reveals just as much distrust of the government and secessionist impulses as anything on the right.

Large numbers of Asian and Latino immigrants poll in favor of big government despite coming from countries whose governments are brutal and oppressive. But it’s often the people who come from tyrannies who are also most likely to support them.

The neutral spaces of the Bill of Rights are not real ideas to them the way that they are to many Americans. The idea that government can simply be forced out of a space without that space being filled with either a more repressive government or gangs collecting protection money is often not a part of their experience and so not a realistic calculation for them.

Government to them is a power struggle. It’s not a question of how powerful government should be, they assume that it’s always powerful, but who steers the beast. And so they vote Democrat, because the Dems promise to steer it to their advantage.

It’s a mistake to try and break down minority alliances with government to specific issues such as immigration or health care. Issues are only the subset of a larger cultural arrangement based on a distrust of government. In a worldview in which government is always abusive and corrupt, the only question is who gets it worst and who benefits from that corruption.

That kind of trust in government isn’t trust, it’s a calculated amoral strategy based on mistrust, like a shoplifter who steals because all of society is based on theft. Small government is a traditionalist strategy based on a historical memory, part real part not, of a system where more freedom and wealth were available by minimizing government power.

The other side rejects that historical memory as naive and irrelevant in favor of grappling for power now.

It’s not just an issue with minorities. The Tea Party runs into that same issue when polls show that the commitment of Americans to small government stops when it’s to their disadvantage. That is the gap that the left knows about and exploits in its traditional style of creating a patchwork system of fines, taxes and subsidies that create massive inequalities but force everyone to cling to their privileges.

Once you accept that government isn’t going to be reformed, then clinging to whatever advantages it gives you becomes a plausible survival strategy until the whole thing collapses under its own weight or the weight of public outrage. The Soviet Union outlived Russian Communism until enough people inside and outside the government decided that they could live better if they gave Marx and Lenin the boot. But if there hadn’t been Western counter-examples that became increasingly hard to shut out, it might have taken much longer to fall because there would have been no visible alternative.

The right in the United States has its alternatives to the current setup and the left has its usual totalitarian fantasies, but the clients of the left don’t see an alternative. They are too insecure and unwilling to gamble with their lifelines to failing setups such as generous social welfare or municipal unions to gamble with an open system. And those in the private sector are equally unwilling to support any destabilizing change that doesn’t come with pre-approved promises of benefits.

Conservatives dream of defaulting to society, but for many of the clients of the left there is no larger society. They place no trust in a larger society that is bound by few formal laws because it appears to them to operate by a kinship that places them outside it. They understand how government works for all its abuses, but they are far less trusting of a society that they are not truly part of.

And it may be wishful thinking to assume that the society still even exists. Libertarian deregulation alone would not default to a working society. No more than the absence of law does in Mexico or Somalia. It’s not some arcane crowdsourced magic, some wisdom of the mob that makes a society work, but the values of civilization. The United States isn’t Somalia or Mexico, yet, but its social breakdown can be seen in the broken families and gangs. And there are few opposing factors.

The militarization of the police has come hand in hand with the collapse of values and mores. Take enough broken families, pile what’s left over into gangs and the drug trade and before long you need a lot more police to deal with everything from domestic violence complaints to everyday rapes and murders to the bigger stuff that moves up the organized crime ladder all the way to gang warfare.

In a broken society, there are a limited range of options between the fascist government and the feudal cartel, between the gangs and the cops with their repurposed military gear, between the state and a state of lawlessness. And it’s the immigrants from failed states who are the eagerest to embrace government as a hedge against the night. It doesn’t mean that they trust it. It means that they distrust everything and everyone else.

While the left is obsessed with pushing society until it breaks and can be put back together their way, their clients have mostly accepted that society is broken, that families don’t stay together, that men and women can’t count on each other, neighbors can’t be trusted and that freedom leads to anarchy.

It’s not just that they need to be convinced to trust us, they also have to be convinced to trust themselves. It’s easier to trust the government because it is an abstract, a set of ideas and symbols lacking in human frailties. The collective always seems stronger than the individual, even if isn’t. An older breed of American distrusted the group, but elections are increasingly being won by cities and their satellite suburbs where people have despaired of the individual and believe in authority.

People only believe in governments when they lose faith in themselves and their society. The great work of the counterculture was destroying the faith of Americans in their own society, trampling their beliefs through the mud in a dozen different ways, demoralizing them, tearing down their culture and making a self-reliant individualism as difficult to sustain and as socially unacceptable as possible.

When the counterculture couldn’t attack directly through regulation, it attacked indirectly by wrecking the family. When it couldn’t get the numbers it needed quickly enough, it turned to immigration from failed states. That is the end result before us now.

An authoritarian state is a failed state. It represents a failure deeper than that of mere government, but of society. Before a state fails, its society fails. A culture can survive a failed state, but a failed culture cannot help produce anything except a failed state.

America is drifting into totalitarianism because of the left’s exploitation of social failures. The critical mass of social breakdowns, from gang violence to terrorism to poverty, justify the nanny state, the police state and all the other totalitarian states of authority. When there is nothing and no one else to trust, a failed society turns to a tyrant who can cut through all the red tape and govern with pen and phone.

Food Stamp Shutdown Threat: Obama To Incite Riots & Chaos?

Niggerriot

A letter is circulating from the USDA that directs state EBT/Food Stamp programs to suspend payment ‘until further notice’.

There is no such thing as coincidences when it comes to government tyranny.  Last weekend the EBT/SNAP foodstamp card program suddenly shut down and welfare cards were no longer working across 15 states.

Computer Glitch Blamed For Nationwide EBT System Shutdown On Saturday

People in Ohio, Michigan and 15 other states found themselves unable to use their food stamp debit-style cards on Saturday, after a routine test of backup systems by vendor Xerox Corp. resulted in a system failure.
Once it was learned that the “glitch” did not show account balances – and a local Walmart was honoring EBT purchases – the welfare mob descended on a Louisiana Walmart and emptied the shelves in under 2 hours.
I don’t believe a word they say.  I would not doubt for a SECOND that the EBT outage was a ‘dry run’ for what Obama plans to do to next in the solidification of his dictatorship.   Especially given what is circulating as a possibility this morning, that EBT/SNAP/Welfare benefits are going to cease beginning in November.  Fox News obtained a copy of a USDA letter allegedly sent out to all states.

USDA EBT Shutdown

A PDF of an official USDA document of a government shutdown plan corroborates the effects on EBT/Food Stamps/WIC and other benefits should the “lapse in funding” continue.  Pay close attention to the following excerpted segments:

Specific program impacts of a lapse in funding are provided below. These impacts assume that the lapse is of short duration (i.e., less than one month). Should the funding lapse be longer, the FNCS contingency plan and these associated impacts will be re-visited and updated:
• The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will continue operations and eligible households will still receive monthly benefits for October. The authority to make October benefit payments comes from the Recovery Act, through which Congress provided “such sums as are necessary” to finance the SNAP benefit provided for in the Recovery Act. In addition, about $2 billion in contingency funding will be available and could be used to support State Administrative activities essential to continue the program and issue and process benefits. These contingency funds were provided in the FY 2013 appropriation and do not expire until the end of FY 2014.
• USDA is working with WIC State agencies to use all available funding resources to provide benefits to participants. FNS will be allocating both contingency and carryover funds to State agencies for use in operating their FY 2014 WIC Program, in addition to other available funds. Should a lapse extend through late October, federal WIC funding may not be sufficient to cover benefits.
• The Child Nutrition (CN) Programs, including School Lunch, School Breakfast, Child and Adult Care Feeding, Summer Food Service and Special Milk will continue operations into October. Meal providers are paid on a reimbursement basis 30 days after the end of the service month. Limited carryover funding will be available during a lapse to support FY 2014 meal service. Once an appropriation is enacted, we expect additional resources will be available to reimburse October performance. In addition, most State agencies will continue to have fiscal year 2013 funds available for State Administrative Expenses (SAE). SAE funds are awarded to States for a two year grant period and they are permitted to carryover up to 20 percent of their allocation into the second year of the grant period.
• No additional federal funds would be available to support the Commodity Assistance Programs (CAP) including the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) administrative funding, and the WIC Farmers’ Markets Nutrition Program (FMNP). Similarly, no new funds will be available to support the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR). While there would be some inventory available for use in food packages, no carryover, contingency or other funds would be available to support continued operations.

There are also threats of Section 8 housing benefits, heating assistance programs and other welfare benefits being shut down in MA as well.

Utah families on food stamps could be cut off soon

States across the country are being told to stop the supplemental nutrition assistance program for the month of November, pending further notice.

That’s according to a letter from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Fox 13 obtained a copy from the Crossroads Urban Center in downtown Salt Lake City. Crossroads says if Utah families don’t get food stamps, they’ll turn to the local food pantries, which are already strapped due to the government shutdown. Homeless people Fox 13 talked to, some who use SNAP, say losing food stamps would mean going hungry.

I think Obama wants the following kinds of optics to be blamed on his opponents in Congress and those Americans who are wise to his ‘fundamental transformation’:
ebt-signWalmartline niggers jump counter emptygroceryshelves
Considering that Obama has told the Federal government to make the shutdown “as painful as possible” – shutting down welfare/food stamps takes that policy and instantly creates misery for an army Obama would no doubt incite to riot and cause mayhem so to be used as a weapon for his demands and justification for dictatorial acts he is (I believe) about to commit.  My reasons for thinking this way are borne out of the following facts.
As the GOP has surrendered and is giving Obama nearly everything he wants – Obama is STILL rejecting their offers to reopen government and raise the debt ceiling until February.  Obama keeps talking and warning about ‘default’ in several speeches over the last few days.  In fact many Federal agencies are “warning” of no payments and massive pain if the country ‘defaults’.
To get his welfare army rioting to force his ascension to Absolute Ruler, why wouldn’t Obama stop food stamps/EBT/Welfare payments?  Looks like that plan is being implemented right before our eyes.
This course of action Obama seems hell-bent on is a sure bet to force Congress to give him what he demands.  It’s what Marxists do when they seize power.  Just look at history!
But here’s a fact not being discussed or even mentioned: we cannot ‘default’ according to the Constitution and the Feds have enough income to service the debt.
We cannot default on debt payments unless they are so massive we cannot make payments- not because of the debt ceiling fight.  Obama wants the debt ceiling raised to pay for future projects or to fast-track a Cloward-Piven style collapse. He is not wanting the debt ceiling raised TO PAY FOR BILLS WE OWE NOW.  Social security checks will be issued until the year 2038, in which time it is estimated to run dry. Congress took surplus out of SS fund and put them in the General Fund but Obama will use the threat of no Social Security checks, no EBT/food stamp benefits and whatever other threat of pain he can muster to frighten the country into capitulating to his tyranny.
The Feds have enough tax income to service the debt UNLESS – Obama himself  orders all payments of everything to stop.  In doing so Obama may be attempting to make Congress irrelevant, and co-op the power of the purse for himself. That seems to match his M.O. to me.  This is a coup going on – an installation of a dictatorial Single Party tyranny.  Obama is on a destroy mission – he’s not interested in governing, he’s consumed with destroying anyone who opposes him, the hallmark of all despotic Leftists that have come on the world scene in modern history.
…How would Obama …justify seizing emergency power? By cutting off all federal entitlement payments while claiming that he cannot continue them without a debt extension, secure in the knowledge that the mainstream media will continue to dutifully serve as his propaganda arm, blaming recalcitrant Republicans for all of the negative consequences.
While senior citizens on Social Security and other federal pension plan recipients may not immediately take to the streets, going on violent rampages of rioting, looting and burning, there is a segment of our population that will do exactly that: many of the 50 million Americans who today literally put the food on their tables by using an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card. While the states administer their individual EBT programs, most of the money comes from the federal government. Please read my previous essay “When the music stops: how America’s cities may explode in violence” to understand the tremendous risk that will accompany a cutoff—even briefly—of EBT payments.

The fact that thousands of Americans might be injured or killed during the nationwide riots that would follow the looting of supermarkets and delivery trucks will not be a moral impediment to the architects of Operation Fast and Furious…

…A lifelong Marxist revolutionary who has caused hundreds to be murdered in an attempt at political gain on gun control is not likely to blanch at the prospect of thousands dying in bloody food riots when the stakes are incalculably higher. If “the music stops” and our cities burn, Obama may grasp the opportunity to declare a state of emergency and seize dictatorial powers from the fire and ashes. Those who resist his rule by emergency decree will be declared to be “Tea Party terrorists” by Democrat leaders and their captive media, and we may finally see why the Department of Homeland Security has been purchasing those billions of hollow-point bullets, UAV drones, and armored vehicles.

If this is their calculation, it is a diabolical plan indeed. But a plan to ride a tiger is not the same as riding the tiger. Permanent rule by emergency decree may not be as simple to accomplish as would-be left-wing tyrants believe. Millions of Americans will not be fooled by the deliberately instigated torching of our cities and will not go quietly into the night of Marxist tyranny.

Dictator Obama Guts Welfare Reform Law By Decree

Obama’s HHS issues a new policy directive that abolishes the 1996 Welfare reform Act.

In yet another blatant example of an Imperial (read Communist Chairman) Presidency, Obama’s HHS issued a new policy directive that REWRITES the 1996 Welfare Reform Law.

In the same vain of playing semantics with the ObamaCare “Tax” or “Penalty”, the Regime today plays around with the definition of ‘work requirements’ and uses that as an arrow through the Achilles tendon of the law to bring it down.  The precedent this sets is quite frankly frightening when you consider that if he gets away with yet another policy directive that ignores the rule of law or rewrites it as he does here, Obama has established that he can rewrite or ignore ANY law of his choosing and make that official federal policy.

Why bother having a Congress at all then?  For a practical matter the Legislative branch no longer exists unless it rubber stamps whatever Obama demands.  We have a dictator right in front of our eyes, being empowered by the very fools and ignoramuses that his regime will hang or shoot the moment his glorious People’s Revolution is achieved.

Thanks to the Heritage Foundation for pointing out what Obama’s HHS has done here.

Obama Guts Welfare Reform

Today, the Obama Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released an official policy directive rewriting the welfare reform law of 1996. The new policy guts the federal work requirements that were the foundation of the reform law. The Obama directive bludgeons the letter and intent of the actual reform legislation.

Welfare Reform under Clinton

Welfare reform replaced the old Aid to Families with Dependent Children with a new program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). The underlying concept of welfare reform was that able-bodied adults should be required to work or prepare for work as a condition of receiving welfare aid.

The welfare reform law is often characterized as simply giving state governments more flexibility in operating welfare programs. This is a serious misunderstanding. While new law (the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996) did grants states more flexibility in some respects, the core of the act was the creation of rigorous new federal work standards that state governments were required to implement.

The welfare reform law was very successful. In the four decades prior to welfare reform, the welfare caseload never experienced a significant decline. But, in the four years after welfare reform, the caseload dropped by nearly half. Employment surged and child poverty among affected groups plummeted. The driving force behind these improvements was the rigorous new federal work requirements contained in the TANF law.

Obama’s Trick to Get Around Work Requirements

Today the Obama Administration issued a new directive stating that the traditional TANF work requirements can be waived or overridden by a legal device called the section 1115 waiver authority under the Social Security law (42 U.S.C. 1315).

Section 1115 states that “the Secretary may waive compliance with any of the requirements” of specified parts of various laws. But this is not an open-ended authority: Any provision of law that can be waived under section 1115 must be listed in section 1115 itself. The work provisions of the TANF program are contained in section 407 (entitled, appropriately, “mandatory work requirements”). Critically, this section, as well as most other TANF requirements, are deliberately not listed in section 1115; they are not waiveable.

In establishing TANF, Congress deliberately exempted or shielded nearly all of the TANF program from the section 1115 waiver authority. They did not want the law to be rewritten at the whim of Health and Human Services (HHS) bureaucrats. Of the roughly 35 sections of the TANF law, only one is listed as waiveable under section 1115. This is section 402.

Section 402 describes state plans—reports that state governments must file to HHS describing the actions they will undertake to comply with the many requirements established in the other sections of the TANF law. The authority to waive section 402 provides the option to waive state reporting requirements only, not to overturn the core requirements of the TANF program contained in the other sections of the TANF law.

The new Obama dictate asserts that because the work requirements, established in section 407, are mentioned as an item that state governments must report about in section 402, all the work requirements can be waived. This removes the core of the TANF program; TANF becomes a blank slate that HHS bureaucrats and liberal state bureaucrats can rewrite at will.

Congressional Research Service: “There Are No TANF Waivers”

In a December 2001 document, “Welfare Reform Waivers and TANF,” the non-partisan Congressional Research Service clarified that the limited authority to waive state reporting requirement in section 402 does not grant authority to override work and other major requirements in the other sections of the TANF law (sections that were deliberately not listed under the section 1115 waiver authority):

Technically, there is waiver authority for TANF state plan requirement; however, [the] major TANF requirements are not in state plans. Effectively, there are no TANF waivers.

Obviously, if the Congress had wanted HHS to be able to waive the TANF work requirements laid out in section 407, it would have listed that section as waiveable under section 1115. It did not do that.

Define “Work”…

In the past, state bureaucrats have attempted to define activities such as hula dancing, attending Weight Watchers, and bed rest as “work.” These dodges were blocked by the federal work standards. Now that the Obama Administration has abolished those standards, we can expect “work” in the TANF program to mean anything but work.

The new welfare dictate issued by the Obama Administration clearly guts the law. The Administration tramples on the actual legislation passed by Congress and seeks to impose its own policy choices—a pattern that has become all too common in this Administration.

The result is the end of welfare reform.

Divorced From Reality

divorcecake

“We’re from the Government, and We’re Here to End Your Marriage.”

This is a very long but detailed and cogent examination of how divorce as an institution has not only virtually destroyed the family in America – but how it is eroding our Constitutional form of governance and Western Civilization’s existence itself.

Our whole culture is rotted, thanks in large measure to the divorce industry.  Indeed the growth of porn, violence, adultery, premarital sex, the Welfare State, the economic slavery of minorities, abortion and even homosexuality can be traced to divorce and the breakdown of the American family.

Where my ears really perked up is near the end of the article, where Mr. Baskerville rightfully places blame.  He does not blame the government, or women’s right’s groups – but levels root blame on the church in America and the West.  And he is right.  Marriage is a religious institution ordained of God from the beginning between a man and a woman.  The hardness of our hearts towards both God and our own spouses for selfishness required God to relent and allow His people to divorce after adulterous affairs.  Today however, America has created an entire institution whereby divorce can happen on a mere whim of unhappiness, an unkind word or simple boredom.

And like the rest of our culture, the Church has done little to reinforce the foundational stones that make our civilization.  America’s churches are become so lukewarm that not even a sacred institution is willingly defended as vigorously as the church attacks judgmentality or intolerance along with the rest of the PC culture.

Divorced From Reality

by Stephen Baskerville

Most Americans would be deeply shocked if they knew what goes on today under the name of divorce. Indeed, many are devastated to discover that they can be forced into divorce by procedures entirely beyond their control. Divorce licenses unprecedented government intrusion into family life, including the power to sunder families, seize children, loot family wealth, and incarcerate parents without trial. Comprised of family courts and vast, federally funded social services bureaucracies that wield what amount to police powers, the divorce machinery has become the most predatory and repressive sector of government ever created in the United States and is today’s greatest threat to constitutional freedom….

…Responsibility of Churches

While many factors have contributed to this truly diabolical, bureaucratic onslaught against the family, we might begin by looking within. The churches’ failure or refusal to intervene in the marriages they consecrated and to exert moral pressure on misbehaving spouses (perhaps out of fear of appearing “judgmental”) left a vacuum that has been filled by the state. Clergy, parishioners, and extended families have been replaced by lawyers, judges, forensic psychotherapists, social workers, and plainclothes police.

Family integrity will be restored only when families are de-politicized and protected from government invasion. This will demand morally vigorous congregations that are willing to take marriage out of the hands of the state by intervening in the marriages they are called upon to witness and consecrate and by resisting the power of the state to move in. This is the logic behind the group Marriage Savers, and it can restore the churches’ authority even among those who previously viewed a church’s role in their marriage as largely ceremonial.

No greater challenge confronts the churches—nor any greater opportunity to reverse the mass exodus—than to defend their own marriage ordinance against this attack from the government. Churches readily and rightly mobilize politically against moral evils like abortion and same-sex “marriage,” in which they are not required to participate. Even more are they primary stakeholders in involuntary divorce, which allows the state to desecrate and nullify their own ministry.

The Prophetic Past That Warned Us Where We Now Find Ourselves

de-tocqueville.jpg

“The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money.”

“Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, ‘equality’. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.” – Alexis de Tocqueville

I am encouraged when countrymen look into our past history to consider what our Patriarchs, Framers and even brillaint and simple men noted about the gift of liberty that is unique to America in all the world’s existence. There has been a bit of talk about one noted philosopher and author Alexis de Tocqueville, who came to America in 1831 and 1832 to write about his impressions of America from a European perspective after he was quoted in a Powerline Blog, and got mention on talk radio circles today.

What is so timely about the following notations from “Democracy In America” is that they put an exclamation point on the dangers this Election Cycle is parading in front of us with the various pushes and calls for bigger government Socialism, oversights, “fairness” and safety (for the children of course). From the scam that is Global Warming to the promises of what Nationalized Health Care will mandate – you can read de Tocqueville and feel as if you just read an indictment of our current culture and political circus that is this year’s elections.

In Democracy in America, Alexis de Tocqueville famously concludes with a warning of the kind of despotism to which democracies are especially susceptible. Of particular note is the chapter: “OF CERTAIN PECULIAR AND ACCIDENTAL CAUSES WHICH EITHER LEAD A PEOPLE TO COMPLETE THE CENTRALIZATION OF GOVERNMENT OR DIVERT THEM FROM IT”.

Among men who have lived free long before they became equal, the tendencies derived from free institutions combat, to a certain extent, the propensities superinduced by the principle of equality; and although the central power may increase its privileges among such a people, the private members of such a community will never entirely forfeit their independence. But when equality of conditions grows up among a people who have never known or have long ceased to know what freedom is (and such is the case on the continent of Europe), as the former habits of the nation are suddenly combined, by some sort of natural attraction, with the new habits and principles engendered by the state of society, all powers seem spontaneously to rush to the center. These powers accumulate there with astonishing rapidity, and the state instantly attains the utmost limits of its strength, while private persons allow themselves to sink as suddenly to the lowest degree of weakness.

Tocqueville warns that the passion for equality will give rise to a certain kind of degradation in which citizens will surrender their freedom democratically to a tutelary power:

Above these [citizens] an immense tutelary power is elevated, which alone takes charge of assuring their enjoyments and watching over their fate. It is absolute, detailed, far-seeing, and mild. It would resemble paternal power if, like that, it had for its object to prepare men for manhood; but on the contrary, it seeks only to keep them fixed irrevocably in childhood; it likes citizens to enjoy themselves provided that they think only of enjoying themselves. It willingly works for their happiness; but it wants to be the unique agent and sole arbiter of that; it provides for their security, foresees and secures their needs, facilitates their pleasures, conducts their principal affairs, directs their industry, regulates their estates, divides their inheritances; can it not take away from them entirely the trouble of thinking and the pain of living?

If one truly looks at and examines our culture and politics today in light of what Tocqueville is warning about – one could easily see that we have already arrived at that crucial point. Both political parties seem to be in a race over which one gets to be the bigger parent. You might recall the 1992 Presidential debate when an old hippie with pony tail asked Bill Clinton: “”We are your children, we have our needs. What will you do to take care of us-to take care of our needs?”

Government today works almost exclusively towards “providing” happiness, entertainements, bail-outs and free hand-outs to specific groups it decides deserves the largesse of the federal treasury from the pockets of a working class the government uses like slaves. All to the point that politicans and government talk about nothing but facilitating the pleasures of people, regardless how depraved and consequential they may be; dictates how industry works such as the demands Congress just placed on automakers for fuel-efficient cars and the abolishment of incandescent light bulbs for “enviro-freindly/mercury-filled” flourescents. Private property is now the pervue of the state according to the KELO decision of the Supreme Court; in Illinois you cannot smoke outside in any public place, in California not even in your own car. Your wealth is confiscated in taxes for those the government decides should receive it. This culture blames the government for not doing enough after Katrina or demanding they do something about high gas prices in the absolvement of any responsibility they should have for themselves, fulfilling what Tocqueville said about “tak[ing] away from them entirely the trouble of thinking and the pain of living”

I suppose we could almost declare Tocqueville a prophet in light of where we are today with what he was warning we could become.

Subjection in small affairs manifests itself every day and makes itself felt without distinction by all citizens. It does not make them desperate, but it constantly thwarts them and brings them to renounce the use of their wills. Thus little by little, it extinguishes their spirits and enervates their souls….

In listening to the political candidates, almost every single one of them is a purveyor of this disease. The fight for redefining what Conservatism means into some perverted nanny-state caring for others by use of government simply underscores where de Tocqueville said this Republic would end-up if we were not careful and vigilant.

Well….here we are.

Perhaps if we studied our roots rather than the latest ball game stats or arguing over who will win the next Survivor or America’s Next Top Model, we could have a chance to recpature what is being lost.

I’m not to hopeful, as the populace is become exactly like the ponytail Kid in 1992, that declared that all of us were children of Big Mama Government.
